This is the only country that I have a "regular visiting schedule" for: once every two years, I go there for hiking. Famed for its clocks and watches, Switzerland runs on time. You can really almost set your watch by the time the train leaves the station! This and the fact that it is clean, picturesque and has lots of well-marked hiking trails and transport up into the mountains, makes it a joy to go there. Swiss food is also good stuff. Unless you dislike cheese, having a fondue is a must; rosti (a potato dish) is also delicious.
Switzerland has a history of keeping itself to itself, but equally certainly is not isolationist; recently it has announced it will join the zone of Schengen countries, meaning travel there will be even easier. Switzerland continues to stay out of the EU, however.
There are no less than four official languages, and none of them are English. English is, however, widely spoken, especially so in places your are likely to visit as a tourist.
Hiking in the mountains is one of the best ways to explore this wonderful country. However, it's important to do so with respect: mountain hiking is not like going to Disney and there are real dangers out there. Watch the weather, which can change especially quickly, stick to the trails (this is good also for not destroying the place by causing soil erosion), make sure you are going to make the last bit of transport down from high places if applicable (allow some spare time) and be aware of the difference that being at high altitude makes. All that said, provided you take sensible precautions, Switzerland is a safe place to go hiking.
