Slovenia

Slovenia is the only place I've been to date where I found myself cut off from much of the country that I hoped to explore by massive flooding. It was sad to see a beautiful place suffering, not to mention not being able to get out and see as much of it as I'd hoped to. Thus, I spent most of my time wondering around the area immediately surrounding lake Bohinj, following some of the trails that hadn't been blocked by landslides or been turned into new rivers. Even in those circumstances, it still felt like a kind of fairytale place.

Bled, the other town I managed to get out to, was truly something out of a fairy tale. A castle looked from a cliff down onto a shimmering lake, which in turn had an island with a church on it. I doubt it was designed to be a tourist draw - the castle is at a genuinely great lookout point - but it certainly works as one!

Thanks to the floods, I didn't get get to see the capital or the small bit of coastline that Slovenia has, and is, I was told, very proud of. I did, however, get to watch the bringing down of the cows from the mountains at a local festival and enjoy a nice fresh chocolate pancake. Palakachinka is, for some reason, the Slovene word that sticks in my mind more than any other.
