Ulan Ude

in Russia

The capital of Buryatiya, an autonomous republic within Russia, Ulan Ude has something of a different feel about it than other cities in Siberia. The Buddhist culture lives on there today, the people look a little different and the regional museum has plenty of Buddhas. The world's largest Lenin head dominates the main square, however, so there's no forgetting that you're still in Russia!
