Oslo

in Norway

My word is this place expensive. And yet, even as I sit sipping on the extortionately priced beer with the friendly locals - knowing I could have got five of them for the same price back home - I always feel happy to be there. I went first as a backpacker, but have managed to make it there a couple of times since for computing events too.

The city is, like Norway in general, pristine. There's pretty much nothing you could call a skyscraper; instead, there is a nice fortification on a hill, a harbor full of yachts and a museum with excavated Viking longboats. Oh, and then there's the line on the underground railway line that goes very much above ground, into the hills surrounding the city, at which point you realize that the Norwegian capital really is set in a beautiful wilderness of lakes and trees. It's all so costly...but oh so worth it.
