Austria is picturesque, from the alps and mountain villages in Tirol to the capital Vienna. Living in Bratislava, the Slovak capital, gives me the pleasure of being just an hour from Vienna by train, so I'm there often. The architecture is good, and quite typical of that elsewhere in the former Austro-Hungarian empire. Don't miss out on trying a Vienna schnitzel!
While Vienna is great, for me the real treat lies in the south west, however. The couple of cable car journeys that take you up to the Kitsteinhorn offer views that, on a clear day, let you see one snow-capped mountain range after another stretching away to the horizon. It's one of the best views in the alps that I have found yet. I've done some great hikes in the region too.
Thus, while I can't say every bit of Austria is beautiful - because I haven't been to every part - so far, I've enjoyed it very much. For the scenery and for at least some of its cities, it's well worth a trip.
